Skoto Gallery was established in 1992 as a space for exhibiting exceptional works by established and emerging  African artists to a diverse audience. Our inaugural exhibition was curated by the esteemed African-American jazz luminary Ornette Coleman. As one of the first galleries in New York City to specialize in contemporary African art, we have played a significant role in the development of this rapidly expanding field. While maintaining a strong commitment to contemporary African art, the gallery has also broadened and diversified its programming to engage with wider contemporary issues, featuring a broad range of art and artists. We approach art ecumenically, often organizing exhibitions that highlight the underlying connections within a postmodern global culture.
